In 2017, I was invited to photograph the official campaign for the Hong Kong Harbour Race, one of Asia’s most iconic open-water swimming events, held annually in Victoria Harbour. A celebration of endurance and reconnection with the city’s coastline, the race also serves as a public call to embrace swimming as an inclusive and empowering activity.
Through my lens, an extraordinary range of individuals came together: school principals, movie stars, socialites, feng shui masters, opera singers, students, tennis players, Olympic swimmers, pianists, film directors, musicians, tattoo artists, actresses, and more — all united by the water.
The portraits captured not only physical determination, but also the quiet stories and personal motivations that draw people to swim. It remains one of the most dynamic and socially resonant projects I’ve had the privilege to create.
